The Key to Being Satisfied

Matthew 5:6 6Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied!

Our heart’s desire should be to stay in a place of right-standing with our Heavenly Father. Unless we are following His plan and obeying His will for our lives we will not be completely content, because we will always be searching for the thing that completes us. I think it is interesting that in Mathematics being satisfied means balancing both sides of an equation by finding the values of the unknown variables. We have unknown variables in our lives too, and so many times we think that we will be satisfied if we can only find them. Many times people think, if I can just meet the right man (or woman) I’ll be happy; or If I could just get that perfect job; or If only I could have a baby; or even, if only I could lose 20 pounds I would be completely satisfied. We as believers know the only true source of satisfaction that we have is in serving God.

In John chapter 4 Jesus is talking to the Samaritan woman at the well. He asks her for some water and she is surprised, since generally the Jews didn’t have anything to do with the Samaritans. In verse 10 Jesus says 10Jesus answered her, If you had only known and had recognized God’s gift and Who this is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him [instead] and He would have given you living water. The woman is confused and wonders how He could possibly give her water since He has nothing to draw it with. Verses 13-14 13Jesus answered her, All who drink of this water will be thirsty again.   14But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life. The living water that Jesus spoke of is also available to you and me. All of us who hunger and thirst after righteousness are assured of being satisfied. As long as we keep our focus on the things of God, the desires of our heart will line up with His plan, and then we are assured of seeing those desires come to pass.
