1 John 4:7-11 7Beloved, let us love one another, for love is (springs) from God; and he who loves [his fellowmen] is begotten (born) of God and is coming [progressively] to know and understand God [to perceive and recognize and get a better and clearer knowledge of Him]. 8He who does not love has not become acquainted with God [does not and never did know Him], for God is love. 9In this the love of God was made manifest (displayed) where we are concerned: in that God sent His Son, the only begotten or unique [Son], into the world so that we might live through Him. 10In this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (the atoning sacrifice) for our sins. 11Beloved, if God loved us so [very much], we also ought to love one another.
Let us love one another. We’ve talked about this before, but it is a subject that we can never hear enough about! God is love, so when we exhibit this characteristic in our lives, we gain clearer knowledge of who He is. There are so many ways we can show love to those around us, both the people we know and even total strangers. I’ll brag on my husband for just a minute. The other night we stopped a t a drive-thru restaurant to grab a quick bite to eat after church. We saw the woman in the car in front of us had a problem with her credit card and the cashier told her she couldn’t use it. The lady started to hand the cashier her drinks back and was going to drive away, when my husband yelled out the window, “Wait! We’ll take care of it.” The cashier gave the woman her food and we saw that she had small children with her and they were crying, I guess because they thought they weren’t going to get their food. We didn’t speak to this woman, we didn’t invite her to church, we didn’t preach to her, we just saw that she had a need and met it for her. We were able to show her love without her ever knowing our names and without her ever even seeing our faces. What a great feeling it was to be able to be a blessing.
What can you do today to show God’s love? A phone call to a friend, just to let them know you are glad to have them in your life. A note written to your husband telling him he means the world to you. Giving your kids an extra hug and kiss. Helping the elderly lady at the grocery store get that box off the top shelf. Taking a moment to ask the cashier how her day is going, and really listening to her answer. Offering to babysit your neighbor’s kids so she can have a little time to herself. Going out of your way to find ways to bless others. Ask God to show you creative ways to spread His love. Be sensitive to His spirit and then be obedient to follow through. As you show His love more and more you will look more and more like Him.
